The hardest thing to find in life is balance . . . Celine Dion
Would you say you have balance in your life? Are you able to live both your personal and professional lives in a way where you can thrive and flourish?
The first step requires commitment and knowing what makes you happiest. What are you passionate about? Do you build in time to live your passion? (We’ll focus on work and careers, but don’t lose sight of your personal life).
As professionals, we believe there are 4 primary roles that we play:
LEADER – Taking others where they have not been before and would not go by themselves
MANAGER – Planning, organizing, controlling, and following-up
COACH/MENTOR – Helping others achieve their desired goals and objectives
TECHNICIAN – Doing the job or task extremely well
We’re all leaders since we all influence others, but what is our actual position and what are our job requirements? Once you define that, assess how much time you spend in the roles above.
Is it an even split? Should it be? If you’re leading a team of people, you want a higher percentage of your time spent in the top role. We’ve found that many of us enjoy the other 3 roles, and therefore struggle with letting others focus on them.
This leads to effective delegation which is a story in itself, but does link with a 5th component, and that is DEVELOPMENT.
We must schedule time for SELF DEVELOPMENT, as well as development time for our organization and team members. What got us to where we are today will not likely take us and others to where we want to be “tomorrow”.
How do you schedule each day? Think in terms of what is required to achieve your goals and expect and plan for interruptions and exceptions.
SUCCESS = Defining your balance of roles, planning each day, incorporating your passion
